Destabilizing Misconceptions: Exploring a Few Myths about Sexual Intimacy Among Elderly Individuals

Sexual intimacy is an essential component of an individual’s life at all stages of the cycle. The dominant public discourse on sexuality and sexual intimacy, however, that prevails is that sexual intimacy is the province of the young, not for the older people to engage in. The sexual functioning of older persons has received substantially little attention, perhaps springing mainly from the belief that older persons are asexual.

It becomes crucial to debunk the myths about sexual intimacy among elderly individuals and promote a more accurate understanding of older person’s sexuality. Here are a few common misconceptions:

  1. Older people are no longer interested in sex- Asexuality is one of the prominent stereotypes that one experiences in old age, a product of social norms and religious beliefs. Aging leads to older adults experiencing some sexual changes. A decline in the testosterone level among older men and menopause among older women are often posed as the reasons for the decline of sexual intimacy among older persons.
  2. Older people no longer engage in sexual intimacy because they no longer find it enjoyable- older persons are often vested with the role of ‘carriers of tradition,’ and the dominant societal perception holds that this role outweighs their desires for sexual intimacy.
  3. The need to broaden the definition of sexual intimacy- Sexual intimacy does not constrict itself to the physical act of sex but also involves the emotional closeness between partners.
  4. Older individuals do not need access to sexual health information and resources- Sexual health education and resources are crucial for all age cohorts. Providing older adults with accurate information about sexual health, addressing their concerns, and ensuring access to healthcare resources

By dispelling these myths and promoting a more accurate understanding of older person’s sexuality, we can foster a society that respects and supports sexual health and well-being across the lifespan.

How Fashion dominates the World

How Fashion Dominates the World. Fashion in today’s time has become an exciting topic of discussion wherein everyone wants to put on their best dress to look fashionable; why not? Since that is the trend. Designers are well aware of the needs of such consumers, and to cater to them, they come up with interesting fashionable clothing pieces. When I utter the term ‘fashion,’ it is not just solely restricted to bodywear (in other words, clothes) but also has extended its reach to home wear design and makeup- creating the desire in us to remain “on-trend,” “to be fashionable .”And social media platforms like Instagram have managed to intensify this desire for us to stay on-trend. Talking on a personal note, one opening the Instagram app comes across the reels of social bloggers, which in itself creates the desire to fit into this world of fashion which promotes conspicuous consumption, and we end up buying ‘fashionable items’ which we might not require. This fashion world can be seen in a ...

Deconstructing the workings of consumer capitalism in the construction of an ‘ideal body’

Deconstructing the workings of consumer capitalism in the construction of an ‘ideal body’ If we have a look at the advertising that is constantly displayed around us, we notice that there is one aspect immanent to nearly all of it. It is the usage of the body. The employment of the body and especially the sexualised body in the media is not a new phenomenon but has been a part and parcel of the industry since its inception. What differentiates advertising in the 21st century from before is not so much the use of images of the always perfectly shaped bodies but the presentation of this body as something that inevitably must be obtained through our consumption. Thus, in today’s consumer society that body becomes another site of consumption for the capitalists to garner profit from. And thus, the media fabricates the notion that our body needs constant improvement. Something that is very visible in today’s society is the shift that has taken place from advertising that concentrated on the...
